The home school idea is interesting and has merit, provided the parents have some skills. My good buddy was thinking about doing this and I am very glad he did not. He is a good buddy, but he is not Feynman -g-
And, I am extremely grateful that my father or mother never considered this idea. I'm certain that your effort is positive, but for the world at large I'm not too sure.
Then there is the social interaction. I think that is important. I learned early that "chuck" was cool, and I better get my act together fast if I was going to make time with girls. And, if had not gone to public school I would never have met Mr. Digon and Mr. Liss; Two guys that profoundly shaped my thinking in the 7th grade.
Regarding the original topic, I am no longer amazed at the number of people who want big daddy to guide them. I think many Americans are just plain lazy and they have expectations that are based on something someone has told them (programmed) to think. It's sad really. You probably don't recall a comment I made on the Woodshed about a month ago. I had watched a woman try to ship a computer at Fed Ex, and she had no box. She was helpless, and I wondered how she ever managed to use the computer. Somehow she had managed to snag a nice $40,000 SUV, but that is a mystery I'll never solve.
Your statement about the "luck" of where we are born could launch a month of discussion. Religion, predestination, luck, grace, nationalism, the list is endless. Americans in the latter half of the 20th century are indeed very lucky.
Screening kids for mental health with the motive of selling drugs makes me really mad. That much I do know.
