This is a difficult medium for abstract discussion of complex subjects. There are always varying contexts and asumptions that confuse things. I think your response makes sense in the context I infer, which is that we're fighting some peripheral and optional little war.

That was not the context I had in mind. I had in mind an existential conflict for two reasons. One is that the very foundations of our country are not at risk in peripheral and optional little wars so patriotism re those foundations isn't a critical matter. They're only at risk when the militant hoards are at our doorstep. The other reason I assumed an existential conflict was because that the vast majority of the denizens of this thread think the war we're in is immediate and existential or darned close to existential. This is in contrast to the vague-threat/nuisance crowd on the other side, of which I am a part.

So, as I said, if you're looking at this as a minor war, I appreciate/agree with your position. But if the fight is immediate and existential, then I think you're off base. IMO, if one thinks the war is existential, then one has to fight it without consideration of who is CIC. If, OTOH, the war is optional, then we have the latitude to pick and choose what we support and when and still call ourselves patriots.
