Average net worth of an American is a lot more than 40K. The median net worth is more than 50K, if memory serves. The average net worth is a lot more than the median and still probably more than the average in Australia -- though I am not sure for how much longer. The reason the average and median differ so much is because wealth in America is much less evenly distributed than other developed countries.
