I think what really happened is this:

(1) Edwards throws out the Mary Cheney thing in his debate;
(2) Focus groups conducted after the debate showed the remark played really well to some constituency that Kerry/Edwards wants to appeal to;
(3) So Kerry threw it out there again.

What group it appeals to, who's to say. But imo there was a specific goal they had in mind.
