Bush looked great, from beginning to end, unlike the first debate, when he looked weary and hassled.

Again, a Rashomon moment. And, I think, the result of lowering the bar SO low that he would have looked good to you as long as he didn't drool and blow his own brains out.

Using Ted Kennedy as a benchmark for positioning Kerry was not gratuitous at all.

Yeah, right. And the new Prime Minister of Iraq isn't an American puppet.

If there had been a legitimate point to make by referring to the daughter, there would be no objection, but there was none, leading to the suspicion that is was ill- intended.

There was a legitimate point in referring to Cheney's LESBIAN daughter. The President is trying to amend the Constitution to discriminate against gays and lesbians! It points out the hypocrisy of his administration.

No, Cheney is not ashamed of his daughter, and they have talked about it openly. But it is smarmy to see if you can depress the conservative vote by bringing it up. Fortunately, it is futile.

How do you know he isn't ashamed? Seems that way to me. As for whether it will depress the conservative/homophobe vote, you hope that it's futile. But you may underestimate the power of prejudice (remember how much Willie Horton scared them?)
