"Ideological rigidity" is a quaint way of saying that they would ignore anything that did not fit their use case.

Its called force fitting data to a curve.

Its wrong in science, and its wrong by any common sense standard when the issue at hand is going to war. War with an enemy you already have surrounded, I might add.

And the bottom line remains: This administration had the opportunity to shake up the containment program and make sure that it worked. Clean up all oil for food issues (rumours of problems have been around for eons). Ensure that a usable model was developed, documented and made ready for use in other problem spots in the world.

Want to clean up parts of Africa? Same model could be used with Eritrea and Ethiopia, for example, with help from the Africans themselves. What about failing former Soviet states?

Get the tide moving towards a pattern of functioning internationally driven interventions that work, rather than the chit chat that takes so long to get things going in the UN now.

Bush held up Iraq as a prime example of how the UN could be relevant again, but that was not true at all -- quite the opposite, bowing to the administration's desire to invade Iraq would have doomed the UN to permanent irrelevancy.

Bush had an opportunity to set an example and lead the world and he failed. Pure and simple.

Such a failure should not be rewarded with 4 more years.

Short ES, short Bush, long Oil.
