"Man, that would scare me like I couldn't imagine."

After I found a job, we got back on track pretty quickly. The worst thing was the 30 pounds I gained. Cold pizza became a major dietary staple during that year. I couldn't face a pizza for years afterwards...

And yes, bumps happen. How big of a role the government should play is a very open question. I told my story just because there is a persistant belief, not necessarily stated by you, that minimum wagers are teenagers, unskilled or in some other fashion not able to cut it at anything that pays better. Not to say that none of that happens, far from it. But a majority of the minimum wagers I knew/know of are adults and usually female. Often single mothers. With children, the lower wage scales are a huge trap for women. If they are too young to take care of themselves, then child care eats big chunks out of their wages. So they have to work extra hours to make up for that, and that reduces their opportunities to gain extra skills.

Personally, I would rather see universal subsidized child care for working women in certain income groups before there was a raise in minimum wage. But that isn't even on the table right now.
