I tend to think that the Apple faithful are getting slower to do their hardware refreshes thereby offsetting the surge in new users. It's kind of a thin line. If the computer is great, there's no need to upgrade for some time, yet it takes a great computer to attract new purchasers in the current environment.

If you are unemployed or are looking at a diminishing job market then you don't invest in hardware quite so readily. You don't even invest in software - you pirate it. You do what you have to to pay the rent else you end up on the sidewalk*. This isn't the roaring 90s. It's more like Hoover's America in the 30s.

Especially with inflation coming. Gasoline is indeed up and looks like it will be going a lot higher. And anybody with a brain or memories of the 70s remembers what happened to our economy when the government used inflation to pay for the debt of Vietnam.

Kids don't have to pay rent. Kids buy a lot of iPods.

(* Believe me I ride my bicycle through hundreds of people living on the street all the time. It looks like Calcutta in downtown LA and not everyone there is an alcoholic or drug addict. There are plenty of people who had 3 or 4 catastrophes in their lives concurrently and ended up homeless to their great shock.)
