Honestly, I don't think there's a person on this planet who knows how to fix the situation in Iraq. By fix, I mean, pretend that we didn't dismantle the army, dismantle the bureaucracy, the professional class that we didn't throw most of the country out of work for a year and a half, pretend that we didn't kill 30,000 Iraqis or reduce cities to rubble.

That's the 'fix' that people are looking for and it can't be done.

The Israelis-Palestinians have been going at it for, what, 60 years and they don't even have oil that other people want. Should Iraq be any different given that more than one person wants a limited resource (power, money, oil, hegemony, whatever)?

What is the best case scenario for Iraq given the situation that Bush has thrown it into?

Kurdish independence and fighting over the northern oil fields and trouble with Turkey?

Plus

January elections (however absurd) and Sistani and Allawi declaring a sweeping Shiite victory?

Plus

Terrorism continues pretty much unabated but with lulls from time to time and changes in tactics and targets?

Plus

Displaced Sunnis fleeing from what may end up being an Iran-like theocracy?

Plus

US Military guarding oil resources for BigOil and the rest of us who can't stop burning it.

========= Is this the best fix?
