Two hundred years ago yesterday, The expedition court-marshaled John Newman for making mutinous remarks against the captains. the jury of two sergeants and eight privates convicts him, banishes him, and sentences him to 75 lashes.

Two hundred years ago today, the Corps stopped at noon to carry out Newman's sentence. An Arikara chief said his nation might kill Newman to set an example, but they never whip anyone.

The corps spent its first day in future North Dakota, across from today's Fire Heart Butte.
