Why is it, I wonder, that most of the self-appointed 'guardians of decency and righteousness', our later-day Elmer Gantries and Cotton Mathers, in reality are usually some of the most twisted, arrogant, grasping, bombastic and morally repugnant individuals one could ever have had the misfortune to meet?
I'm thinking of such examples as:
Rush --- drug addict, prescription-shopping felon and hypocrite extraordinaire
O'Reilly --- massive egoist and sexual freakoid
Bill Bennett --- lecturer and scold on 'morality', secret gambling addict
Television evangelists in numbers too great to individually mention --- prostitution, sexual harrassment, mega-million dollar financial frauds, God-knows what else.... |
