James, I already know about the 10% of the population that can become alcoholic, and the 10% that are allergic to alcohol. I can understand a person becoming an alcoholic when he is not aware of an ingrained propensity to do so, but that is no excuse to call it a disease. It may be a genetic quirk, but once he knows he has a problem, he should be man enough to attack, and solve, that problem.
Yes, it is a mental, physical compulsion, but a compulsion is not a disease. People have all kinds of compulsions, and in most cases, they are not considered to be diseases. Those that have the compulsion to kill other human beings, may be said to have a disease, but even then, they should be executed, post haste. They are no longer human. People kill mad dogs, don't they. No difference in my mind.
If, when faced with the options of dieing, or quiting and restructuring his life, and makes the decision to continue drinking, then it is that individual's fault. |
