Bush was planning a gay-bashing smear campaign against Kerry via his extremist rightwing "Christian" activists. Talking about Cheney's daughter was not something JK liked to do but it was a necessary way to stop the oncoming Bushie slander, that is to accuse JK of supporting gay marriage just because he's a "liberal from Massachusetts". Smear and fear politics from Bushies must be met with strategic truth-telling, even if it hurts a few feelings.
