Novell Stock Surges Amid
Buyout Rumors

Amid more speculation that a buyout is in
the offing, beleaguered Novell stock surged Friday. Earlier
rumors centered on IBM and AT&T as potential buyers.
Then Netscape. Now Microsoft.

Certainly the Provo, Utah software company could use a fix.
But who would want to buy trouble-even at fire-sale
prices?

IBM already took on floundering Lotus and ought to be
smart enough not to shoot itself in the same foot again.
AT&T just divested itself of NCR, its previous attempt to
enter the computer fray. And even though Netscape might
like to do business with some of Novell's channel partners,
if it waits long enough they'll be at the doorstep anyway,
looking for new products and profit opportunities.

Which leaves Microsoft, the company that spent hundreds
of millions of dollars to beat Novell the hard way. Why
would MS pay for territory it thinks, rightly or wrongly, it
has already conquered?

Smarter idea: There is one company that might be able to
leverage Novell's installed base and
technology-high-flying Cisco, the maker of routers and
other Internet working gear. If you hear that name, then you
might want to take this rumor more seriously.
