I want to see an alternative fuel (especially renewable) developed so it can effectively compete with the major one in use, gasoline. So I want to see more competition. I don't see any short term risk taking to develop it, without any incentives. I believe big oil as part of its strategy will try an obtain the highest prices the market will pay. They, IMO and non oils mentioned here are the most likely to go forward developing it. If we are comparing an alternative fuel such as ethanol . IMO, that fuel would erode or destroy an existing product line of an oil company in refining and marketing.

I know this is not comparing apple to apples, but as far as technology goes. Kodak didn't want to destroy it's market for film based products, at the expense of going forward with digital products. They developed and went forward with the technology as competition forced them to. Especially by companies they had no interest in film.

With the technology available today to find oil. I think the western world area search, has more than peaked to replace existing reserves. I also believe the most promising spots left, are in unstable, politically untouchable, or high risk countries.

Our dependency on imported oil is way to high IMO.
