Dang it! You got me rolling back so far I even dug up my old notebooks:

NURSERYMAN

There is a source in the order
In the beds where the stars are born
Where the Maker of All does His labor
From this womb all His children are torn

And I think that He feels a gladness
When He sends out His children to shine
He says to the arms that are outreached
"When I give them to you, they're still mine."

Long ago with His hand on my shoulder
He said, “Stu come along here with me.
"I'll show you my secrets in millions.
"And here is the first
--it's a tree."

So I followed that very first secret
And I pondered and scratched; and I fought
Now I turn and I look out that window
And I see what my lifeblood has bought

I found my place in the order
All these millions of trees here are mine
I'll send them away packed in boxes
With a prayer in my heart:
"Let them shine."

Stu made the nursery into something to be proud of. Every year I took my people there to inspect our seedlings in their beds. For us, it was a real treat.

Stu was one of the worst smokers that I ever knew, and the last time I saw him I didn’t even recognize him. His head was bald but his eyes still shown. He told us not to feel bad about it.

Then he died a few months later.
