Most people versed (or pickled) in alcoholism would tell you that the alcoholic is born that way. There are problem drinkers but quitting is a mental issue, and sometimes a short term physical issue. It is not the same as the alcoholic who can not take one drink without falling into the same trap. The problem drinker has different issues to face, but their body does react as an alcoholic to that first drink, that first drop, of alcohol. The differences are explained in the Big Book. Granted, a problem drinker who does not take steps to change can wreck just as much havoc.
