Anybody who grew up reading Heinlein knows has been groaning at the cost and futility of our space program.

Blame it on Nixon. He pulled the rug out from under the space program and left it floundering for 30 years. The shuttle and a fixation on LEO was the result. What a waste of time.

Bush's Moon and Mars program are whoppers when you look at the price tag, but at least it refocuses NASA's vision on the horizon, instead of the tips of their toes.

Now I'm optimistic that we won't have to rely on governments to get us into orbit and beyond for much longer.
