"Red Ball Express" was a term occasionally used by SF Teams in Nam when ordering critical combat supplies. Declaring a "Red Ball Express" meant the supplies were needed for a tactical combat emergency. In such a case, there was no such thing as a deadlined vehicle. If it runs, drive it or fly it was the rule.

Ditto for aircraft. I know of hundreds of incidents involving helicopter gunship and dust-off pilots who continued to fly a hot mission even though they were looking at flashing red lights all over their instrument panels. Lights that were screaming at them to land now.

I don't know that this was the case here. I do know that competent logistics officers are as dedicated to getting the combat supplies forward as the Infantry is in finding, fixing and killing the enemy.
