GW is going to be 100,000 votes behind in Florida before November 2 even rolls around.

"Early voting starts Monday

Last update: October 17, 2004

The Nov. 2 general election starts Monday, with voters able to cast ballots at early voting locations in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Following an NAACP lawsuit, Volusia voters can choose from four early voting locations.

Ballots can be cast at City Island Library in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, Deltona Regional Library and Department of Elections headquarters on North Florida Avenue in DeLand. Weekday hours at all sites are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The DeLand and New Smyrna Beach sites will also be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, while Daytona Beach and Deltona sites will open for the same hours on Sundays.

With the exception of Edgewater city voters, voters can choose any of the four locations. Voters who want to vote in Edgewater city elections must cast their ballots in New Smyrna Beach or DeLand.

On Oct. 7, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People sued county Supervisor of Elections Deanie Lowe, claiming a plan to have only one early voting site in DeLand disenfranchised black voters on the county's east side. Days later, county officials announced an emergency plan to open four additional sites. Attorneys for the county and the NAACP settled the suit Friday.

On Friday, County Manager Cindy Coto said preparations -- including training about 25 county employees for the task -- were going well, and the sites were scheduled to open as planned.

"Any issues we've identified as potential obstacles, we've been able to overcome," Coto said. In Flagler County, early voting is available at the elections office on State Road 100 in Bunnell from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Early voting ends Nov. 1.
