Bush responded by saying, "I know what this question is about, it's about Iraq." In other words, it was a trick question. And nothing requires forthright humble men of the West to fall for trick questions.

In fact, I can't even imagine a forthright humble man of the West answering this question at all. John Wayne wouldn't have. "Never complain, never explain."

It's important to own up when you make mistakes, but once you have done that, let it drop and move on. Bush said his mea culpas already and that's the end of it. Accept it or don't.
