However I have e-mailed them to see if I can purchase a term deposit (investment certificate) as opposed to opening an account per se.

In Canada if I buy US equities and realize a profit, I am obliged to declare the profit to Revenue Canada and taxed (cap gains) accordingly. No US tax or reporting. I presume they have a reciprocal agreement for US 'ers trading this way.
