Tim: Gulf 1 was pure combat and US-led. The invasion and occupation of Iraq is not US-led -- we abdicated our leadership role -- and it is not primarily a combat mission. By foregoing our global leadership role while taking on a "nation building" mission, we put ourselves in a very bad position. This is not about the niceties of international institutions, it is about the needless deaths of Americans -- it is about the needless cost to Americans -- it is about the harm it has done to the "war on terror". When we lead we win. When we fail to lead we lose. We are losing.
