I think the key issue is abortion. If abortion was removed from the federal arena, politics would be very different in America. There are not that many Democrats who favor abortion on demand even at nine months gestation, and there are not that many Republicans who favor criminalizing even "morning after pills," but they hold the rest of the party hostage.

For the Democrat party, hanging on to Roe v. Wade is everything.
