... I think the great majority here in the US are only concerned with US deaths and casualties. This is very sad, especially since we are now told that we HAD to go in, partly for humanitarian reasons in Iraq. Hard to justify that as we kill thousands there.

Interesting comments. Up here (Canada), there has always been a great deal of concern about the deaths of Iraqis, and how it would be possible to go in and take out Saddam without killing many innocent people. It seems that, somewhere along the line, in the midst of all the gung-ho glee to kick-some-asses, the original goal of removing Saddam and his sons has almost entirely fallen by the wayside. The sons are dead and Saddam rots in some prison, but meanwhile, the people who were to be "saved" are now in the middle of a chaotic war zone with no end in sight. As I hear the reports of another 50 or 60 people blown up by car bombs, or wiped out by missiles aimed at insurgents, I just think, "this is entirely nuts." I don't actually know of even one other Canadian in all of my circle of friends, family and acquaintances, who isn't thinking that this whole thing has been absolutely insane right from day one. While I feel greatly for the American military -- and the friends and family of each person killed or maimed in action -- I cannot even begin to see any logic to this pointless war -- and I have many European friends who feel the same way. All I feel is a great sense of disgust, horror and fear over the way this whole thing has been handled, and of where all of this is likely to go.
