'Smooth Transition' Seen For New Varian Semi CEO
10.18.04, 12:07 PM ET

Standard & Poor's Equity Research maintained its "hold" rating for Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates (nasdaq: VSEA - news - people ) after the chip equipment-maker named a new chief executive. Varian Semiconductor said former KLA-Tencor (nasdaq: KLAC - news - people ) executive Gary E. Dickerson will take over as CEO for Richard A. Aurelio, who will stay with the company as executive chairman. "We believe the choice brings in a strong leader, and we expect a smooth succession," S&P said. "The company cites Dickerson's record of bringing new products to market, and we believe this will prove beneficial as Varian Semiconductor delivers next-generation ion implant equipment at smaller geometries." S&P maintained its 2004 and 2005 earnings-per-share estimates of $1.53 and $2.10, respectively.
