The hiring freeze is nation wide I believe but with exceptions for emergencies. My wife's department got one grade 6 position filled today out of 5 open positions. The higher paying slots, grade 10 and 15, were denied because of no money available to pay for them. The VA centers in VISN's that are located in states that voted for "other guy" in 2000 have severe budget cutbacks well beyond any changes in patient populations. Ask your SF friend why NY/NJ VISN has no money to hire replacement staff. Current list of staff needing to be hired near 100. Things going to come to head fairly quickly as manpower shortages will effect patient care via waiting lists since there is no budget to outsource on fee basis any eligible vets.
