Having spent 30 years in the educational publishing field I have been in public/parochial/private schools in practically all 50 states and many DOD schools in Europe. My observations for all these many years is that various aspects of teaching pedagogy changes on a constant basis. However, there is one change from my own public education days to what I've seen over the past ten years is a phenomenon that only grows more and more each day and that is the number of kids that are on prescribed medications. I was recently in a school in which a kid came in to get her "dose" from the school nurse. She opened a door revealing a table (8x4)that was covered entirely with pill bottles. After she searched for the correct (I HOPE)bottle and gave the kid her medicine, I jokingly stated that the school name should be changed to Walgreen's. The nurse told me that on nearly a daily basis another kid was prescribed to take a medicine and that nearly all were for emotional issues.

My wife is a teacher and nearly each day of the week she has to buy one of her students food since they had no breakfast at home. Between the lack of food for some and the other half being on drugs...we expect these kids to learn and become productive members of society. In a way I find it ironic that we have a president that brags about not being smart, having indulged in his fair share of drugs and alcohol, raised two kids that know how to tip the bottle and smoke those cigarettes and he wants to lecture us on family values. What a great country we live in!!!
