<at this rate, ANZUS runs the risk of being AUS... think about it.>
Kumar, treaties aren't worth the paper they are written on. If the USA wants to defend NZ, we'll be defended whether we like it or not. If they don't we won't. If they want free trade, they'll allow it, or not, whether NZ bleats, or not.
When the French state terrorists attacked NZ via the Rainbow Warrior, the USA yawned, grinned and turned the other way. Terrorists were a-ok then [the right ones anyway].
If the USA wishes to 'unsign' agreements, no problem. Look at Neville Chamberlain waving his "Peace in our time" agreement. Shortly after, that piece of paper was an embarrassment. The powerful do what they like, irrespective of bits of paper.
ANZUS is just a "fair weather friend" deal and always was. AUS is the same. Recently, Oz found that being a good Tonto didn't lead to any particular favours in trade.
Or, do you mean my bolshie comments are likely to lead to NZ being booted [again]?
