Bingo! Gary Hart. It was hilarious. Thanks Paul.
I hasten to admit that NZ is home to plenty of gross cultural norms. These days, they have tended at the extremes into the horrific, with child abuse, cruelty and death of shocking proportions, thanks, I believe, to a culture of welfare, state-bludging, dependency, irresponsibility, violence and theft, drugs and dissolution.
Violent acts per capita are probably now higher than those of the USA, though less fatal [due to the lack of artillery lying around the house].
It's a race to the bottom these days and NZ is in the race and doing quite nicely. I suppose at some stage it will all turn around and people will become responsible for themselves as in the good old days, just as when things got bad in the early 1980s economically, there was a big turnaround in economic management.
Google would have statistics on crime.
The daughter was already a public figure in the debate over homosexuality. She wasn't hiding in the closet avoiding a public presence.
