A new book has been released, the memoir, "Hope and Honor" written by Sid Shachnow.

It is the story of a man (Sid) who begins life as a young Jew, who spent his early years in a Russian concentration camp during the holocaust. He still bears shrapnel scars received during his childhood.

This man came to America at 20 with no knowledge of English, no HS education, and no work skills. Needing a job, he enlisted in the US Army as a private E-1.

Today he has Master's and PhD degrees and he is a retired US Army Major General. Sid's last 2 assignments were US Commander, Berlin and Commanding General of US Special Forces.

I worked for Sid for most of 1972. We have been friends ever since.

I have not read the book yet but I do know his story. This is one awesome human being. He has faced every conceivable adversity life could throw his way with courage and always succeeded.

I also know Sid's wife Arlene. She is a Catholic girl. Funny, straightforward and always looking for ways to help the latest military family in need. They have been married for nearly 50 years. This book has to be terrific. Arlene would ensure that. :o)
