CJ, Pres Bush was in the Lancaster area a few wks ago, talking to the Amish. Do you mean Carl Rove didn't realize the Pres was wasting his time. Why would he be there, if there wasn't a voting bloc? I'm sure there are some Amish families that use heavy-handed discipline. Afterall they are of German descent which was a paternal culture...they even call it the fatherland. Most nations use the term motherland. I visit that area often and observe the strong work ethic. Hopefully the incident with the unfortunate young man isn't the norm. Wouldn't most children have run away by now if it was a harsh environment in general? They seem to be thriving. I often see young couples out for a spin in dad's buggy...at a proper distance from each other of course.<g> It's probably true that I look at them through rose-colored glasses. It seems so wholesome. Did you ever see Harrison Ford's film "Witness"? That's my impression of the Amish. Although, realism isn't usually Hollywood's strong suit. LOL
