One of the interesting things is that the ones who came here to America were often better off to begin with, financially, than the ones who stayed. The passage was hard, and it was expensive. Poor people could not come, and sick people and old people could not come. A poorer family would send the strongest one, in hopes that he or she could make enough money to send for the rest, or at least send money home. That's still the way it is. Today I chatted up the customer service lady at Sam's Club (recent immigrant from Ghana) and the cashier at the nearest ABC (recent immigrant from Sierra Leone). I love to talk to immigrants. Their stories always fascinate me. I always tell them that I am glad that they have come here. They are always grateful to be here. The cashier at the ABC told me that he believes that in Iraq there will be peace. He said that people kill other people because they want power, but once they see that they cannot get power by killing, they stop. This is the way it was in Sierra Leone. But he thanks God that he is in America.
