Many like her who came over had already made arrangements to be "Bound over" to a family for a set number of years, usually 5-7 in order to cover the cost of passage. I have one such example for a female who has the same last name as mine, but is really English. My particular branch came over in 1748 and the last name was anglicized within a generation with different spellings. Many had their names anglicized coming off the boat.
My Norweigian and German branches came over distinctly middle class in family groups. They also made trips back to Europe on occassion, including CA 1754. I have a list of possessions carried to America by the first contingent floating around somewhere. The usual family bible and Chest, but also "one rifle".
