It seems to me that polygamy is necessarily a degradation of females, creating a household where position is determined by the ability to court the favor of a male.

I can think of a number of things that are degrading to females, but are allowed and are allowed contractually.

Besides, if there were a marital contract, could the subsequent wives be shoved down the throat of the first wife? And if not, would every party have to consent to the contract? And if that were so, how would a bond be dissolved? Would all parties have to agree to a divorce settlement? What would happen to matters like child custody or the division of assets in such a case?

My understanding of the sects in the US that practice polygamy [minimal understanding I should emphasize]. The marriage occurs between the man and the woman. The contract includes the provision, that the husband may have additional marriages soley at his discretion [with the consent of the new wife]. Divorces would be terminated accordingly.

It's more difficult if there is no marriage. You would allow a group of people to live together; a man and multiple women without a legal contract. When the man dies, who gets what? There is no legal basis for giving the women anything at all. They are merely co-residents that have no rights of survivorship.
