Maybe the reason you are confused is because your beliefs are inherently antithetical to each other.

I agree with you that religion is personal, but cannot agree that you check your beliefs at the door when voting or serving in public office.

I think that's an artificial construct. Politicians do serve wide constituencies, but it's up to the constituency to decide which politician best serves them. It's not possible for a politician to be all things to all people.

It's not possible to be a Catholic politician and vote to keep abortion legal, just as it's not possible to believe that all men were created equal and vote to keep slavery legal. There are inherent disconnects. Jefferson really believed that blacks were inferior to whites, and that is the truth. If you read his letters, that's what he believed. He did not believe that blacks were entitled to equal rights. Once you realize that, Jefferson makes sense. The statement "all men are created equal" was just pretty words. He really meant "all white male property owners are created equal."

When Kerry says he's Catholic, it's just pretty words. He means he is of Catholic heritage, that he is culturally Catholic, that he enjoys the trappings of Catholicism, and getting Catholic votes.

You can get by for a long time on pretty words, maybe your entire life. But I think your confusion about God is an indication that you aren't fooling yourself.
