When Saddam invaded Iran, it was entirely his idea. As noted above, we didn't even have diplomatic ties to the nation at the time. He claimed Khuzistan province should really be Arab territory - coincidentally it holds most of Iran's oil reserves.

Oddly, you omit Iran's role in starting that war. When Khomeini came to power, he was greeted warmly by Saddam. Khomeini responded by:

1. Rejecting Saddam's peace/alliance initiative
2. Then publicly calling for the Iraqi people to overthrow Saddam
3. Then attempting to assassinate one of Saddam's top officials

Saddam went out of his way to make peace with Iran (beginning in the mid-1970s), until he realized that Iran's government was committed to stirring up a Shia revolt in Iraq. Pay attention, because the U.S. will soon be using this same excuse to invade Iran. And you will be dutifully parroting the party line.
