The October surprise ~~ EVERYONE coming out AGAINST Bush:The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) Political Action Committee announced today that it will be running an ad over the next two weeks on national cable television and in battleground states to shed much needed light on the serious air traffic controller shortage crisis facing the nation as voters head to the polls on Nov. 2. The powerful ad -- which features a pilot calling into a tower for permission to land and receiving a jarring recorded phone message -- concludes with the strong message that "we need a President who won't put safety on hold."

"Protecting the safety of our skies must be a national priority," said NATCA President and NATCA PAC Treasurer John Carr. "The honest truth is that we are facing a critical moment in our aviation history. We are heading towards an air traffic controller shortage that will result in delays, congestion and serious safety concerns. It's just a fact -- if you don't have enough eyes watching the skies, you risk safety. We need a President that doesn't turn his back to the problem looming over our heads. We cannot tolerate a President who continues to put safety on hold."

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have warned Congress of a shortage -- up to 50 percent in less than 10 years. Given that it takes three to five years to train a controller, the shortage needs to be addressed now. In some areas, towers are already understaffed.
