The public money is going to a religious organization whose goal is to push its religious agenda on anyone within reach, including those who MUST cowtow to it out of economic need. And, assuming the religious organization would run a soup kitchen or such (which it well might), that public money frees up religious money for purely religious purposes.

BTW, are American Atheists eligible to receive such funds? How about Black Muslims? Scientologists? Church of Satan?

Do you have any problem with any of them getting tax dollars?
