Actually, the equine part reflects occurrences in nature. The natural reservoir is avian. A few sero-types have adapted and can infect horses (H3N8 and H7N7). Currently human is H1N1 and H3N2, but both can also grow in pigs. Occasionally, other avian sero-types have jumped to humans (like H7N7, H7N3, H9N2, and H5N1). Its the H5N1 that is the main concern at the moment.
