Wharf_Rat > If the earth's mantle is finite, how can oil reserves in the mantle be infinite?

Sure, but there's a play on words here. What is meant is that, because the oil reserves are continually being replenished by means of chemical reactions deep within the mantle, the oil is not in danger of running out as would be the case if the source was bacterial action which occurred sometime in the past and had now ceased. And it would seem, because the sources of the new Russian oil are from sources deep within the earth's crust, this oil definitely did not form from bacterial action which would have taken place near to the surface. Anyway, that's the story -- ya pays yer money and yer takes yer pick!

So, let's say, according to the theory, that the reserves are not "infinite" but will last as long as the earth itself does.
