JIT Java Compilers are Key

As others have stated the trend is to shy away from java chips in favor of using "Just In Time" (JIT) JAVA compilers. This is not "Some Day in the furure" the JIT compilers are in the Win 4.0 Explorer for instance. The code compiler is already on your PC and when code downloads before it is executeed from the server or Web it is compiled on the fly through the JIT engine. It is a slick way to take advantage of local CPU power and leverage future advances in processing computing power. In additon you can update the compiler component to your Web browser on an as needed basis because it is not in silicon. (If the silicon was a Flash implementation you could update it too.)

The portabilty of the virtual machine code is the critical feature. Now is it like Unix portability or True portability? That remains an open question. Proprietary extensions to the language added by third parties that execute on "Tailored" versions of the virtual machine can cause "Unix" like issues for true portability. Hey but thats what the 100% pure java campaign is trying to ensure doesn't happen. If no one adds to the specs and standards then it is all binary compatible. What are the chances? Who could resist adding a couple of features to differentiate themselves? It may start out pure but it will not be for long in my opinion. Too much temptation to try to out do rivals by adding advanced features for telephony, photo realistic printing etc... stuff that didn't quite make it to the first "Generic" standard version.

Have you seen the IE4.0? You need to see it to truely inderstand what the future computing model is anticipated to be by MS. The Browser replaces the "Desktop" as the interface to the local as well as network resources. I'm using it now.

Eric talked about JIT compiling and "Push" technologies or "Channels" as MS calls them. He envisions being the engine for serving all of the JIT code or compiled java in a networked world. He wants to have the best set or development tools for implementing and managing these "New" apllications. MOAB is all about a "Java" being included as part of the Netware OS kernal (NT implements the engine outside the kernal - it is much slower as a result) for executing these type of programs - quickly, efficiently and securely - and within a framework and computing model we are all intimately familiar with - Netware.

This thread would do well to move on - There is no merger. Let's collectively analyze MOAB and the new JAVA development tools. That is the make or break platform for Novell. The positioning is over and it is time to execute - MOAB must not be delayed...
