In Vietnam, the question was how do we achieve "]eace with honor". In Iraq it is how do we get the hell out of there without leaving the place in far worse shape than when we went into Iraq in the first place. The problem is that staying does not make it any better. We are going to leave a mess in Iraq -- the only question is when are we going to leave and how bad is the mess going to be. Meanwhile, the real national security issues we face continue to grow unchecked -- staying in Iraq hurts our national security. We cannot afford to be in Iraq now and we cannot afford to stay. On the other hand, if you want to pretend that our being there helps, you will say that we cannot afford to leave. We painted ourselves into one hell of a corner.
