Hi Mary, so we are driving toward Trier Germany last night and stop by this gas station which doubles as a Mcdonalds. The wife and I decide to order a sandwich when the manager notices are accent is not quite "English". So he asks, where are you from?

We say the U.S. and he goes on and on about how he has been wanting to visit, but hasn't had the chance yet. He doesn't let us leave after picking up our order. He starts telling us a story about his newly purchased motorcycle from America over the internet. He flips open his cell phone, scrolls through to find a picture of it, then insists on telling us all about the price, dimensions, speed and a bunch of other stuff. We fein interest and try to move toward the door, then he insists we go out back and check it out. It was parked behind the Mcdonalds the entire time.

Point is, it was just one of hundreds of encounters I have had all across Europe. You can see it in ordinary everday hardworking people, they sort of light up when they find out you're from America.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure. But it's all I have to go on.

By the way, Trier Germany is a wonderful place!
