Russia test launched its prototype three-stage
solid fuel Bulava missile (also known as the SS-NX-30) from its
Dmitry Donskoy nuclear submarine in the White Sea on Sept. 23. If
the missile ultimately lives up to Russian expectations, it will
include sufficient shielding to be immune to all but the most
intense electromagnetic pulse bursts, its active evasion systems
would make all anti-missile lasers currently under development
useless against it and it would be hardened to the point that even a
nuclear explosion designed to knock it off its flight path would
have to strike within 500 meters - almost a technical impossibility
given current technology.
