And let's take this right back to Thomas Jefferson, the man who essentially wrote the Constitution:

Is this meant to be an argument from authority (look Thomas Jefferson said this so it must be right), or just an argument made by Thomas Jefferson that you thought happened to state the case very well?

Also what's the specific argument? That Jefferson talked about "a well of separation between church and state"? I'm well aware that he made such a statement, even if I didn't have the entire context of it before. The fact that Jefferson made such a statement hardly makes it part of the constitution.

"...Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion.."

If the government contracts out services, including the providing of welfare, then arguably the prohibition of religious organizations from participating is itself an "act respecting religion".
