There is bipartisan support for extending federal unemployment benefits. On February 26, the Senate voted 58-39 in support of extending federal benefits, and on February 4, the House voted 227 to 179 in support of extending benefits. However, because the Republican leadership in Congress opposes extending unemployment benefits, there is no help on the way to American workers.
President Bush has failed to support the extension of federal unemployment benefits.
The President should follow the example of his father, who initially resisted the extension of unemployment benefits, but wisely changed his mind and signed three extensions in 1991 and 1992. Notably, two of the three extensions signed by the first President Bush provided more benefits than the current Democratic proposal.
