Do you really think so? I don't think they want the people restive- which would require more troops, which we do not have. I have always thought our government is simply grossly ignorant of the history of Iraq, the differences between Iraq and the nations that surround it, the difficulties they would encounter in trying to reshape Iraq, and the impossibility of imposing western style government in the area in a short time. In sum, I figure our government is stupid, not actually trying to destabilize, but rather, doing it by accident- of course the result is the same to the Iraqi people. Now I DO think that the government was complicit in creating the fake threat that led up to the war- pressuring the CIA in exactly the same way it was pressured under Reagan to give the answer that was required- rather than a nuanced answer. Of course if I see facts that support the fact that we are intentionally making the region restive, I will be happy to incorporate them in to my model.
Of course the CIA under Reagan didn't roll over as easily- but Casey managed to do them in anyway. This time, I really feel the CIA should have fought back harder- though some did, and some lost their jobs, so perahps I am being too hard on them. But still, considering what was at stake, I can't help but be critical of people who KNEW that there were many problems with the crap Bush & Co were spouting, and yet they did nothing. |
