It never will be, so long as people who claim to be libertarian vote for people like Kerry.

Fringe parties don't grow into viable parties by gradually attracting voters. Our current system obviates that. The only way for the Libertarian Party to become viable would be for a rift in the Republican Party between the libertarians and the Christian conservatives to break up the GOP, which could bring a critical mass of real experience and adult practitioners to the LP or a new version of it, not a likely event. The best chance for folks like me would be for the libertarians to reassert themselves in the GOP and gain a better balance. Could happen, I suppose, but I won't hold my breath.

As for the current candidates, neither Kerry nor Bush is libertarian. I suppose I could analyze which is worse in that department but it would be pointless because they're both unacceptable. I harp about Bush more only because GOP tradition causes me to expect more. I have no libertarian expectations of the Dems so I am not disappointed.
