Interesting thread, MacRandy.

I'm 62 and have been retired for almost 10 years after working for The Big Company for 30 years. I was fortunate to have worked during a time of generous fringe benefits, particularly a retirement plan and savings plan as well as retiree medical insurance. With no family responsibilities (never married) and no debt, I was able to retire in 1995 with the help of an enhanced retirement package that the company was offering its older long-time employees.

The downside to retirement was the loss of a daily structure and the social contact with people at the office. This was compounded when my immediate long-time neighbors moved away within several years of my retirement. But that was offset somewhat by the advent of the internet with its message boards, research tools and online trading. I'm fortunate to have a church with a large singles program that provides a family and social activities. It also has a workout center and volunteer opportunities that I take advantage of. I'm a photographer by hobby and do a limited amount of traveling.

So I seem to stay fairly busy but still have a bit of a problem with the "purpose in life" issue that employment provided.

I've managed to do well overall with my investing but still am 25% off my year-2000 peak which I reached with QCOM and other tech stocks. I recommend Dale Baker's "50% Gains Investing" thread, where Dale posts his investing activity and a weekly summary of his portfolio.

I look forward to reading more from the retired folks here.
